SAD WHFB 2009 Campaign Update

Greetings all

Well, the campaign exploded this last week, with as many games played in one week as the previous three weeks put together. In all there were 9 games last week, 2 on Sunday between Andy and me, and 7 at the club.

The first game on Sunday was a Border Clash between Andy’s Lizardmen and my High Elves. This was a game with few tactics – the Lizardmen came on and stomped through my army, the Engine of the Gods doing horrendous damage both in the magic phase and in combat. The Saurus simply ground their way through my troops until I had only archers left. This was a clear win to Andy.

The second game was a 2,999 points per side War of Conquest, where my HE Lord, fed up with the performance of his border guard, came to stomp Lizards. Andy similarly tooled up, and the game started the same as the other, with a general advance by the Lizardmen. The first round of my shooting saw 4 bolt-throwers hit the Engine of the Gods with single bolts, killing the dreaded creature outright. The HE Lord also shot the Lizardman Lord off his Carnosaur, killing him with a single shot, and the Carnosaur followed the following turn. However, Andy almost pulled it out of the bag when his Saurus warriors chomped their way through my swordmaster units and chariot, killing lots of spearmen and both of my mages and nearly winning the game. It was only a couple of very lucky break tests that kept me in the game, but when my Lord on his Star Dragon got involved it was all over. The game ended a more convincing win to the High Elves than it looked on the table.

On Wednesday two games finished early. My High Elves got very lucky with the dice and broke Stuart’s Ogres quickly. A compensation for Stuart was that I had twice as many territories as him, so a Raid was in effect and Stuart got 2 Campaign Points for his loss instead of one. Andy’s Lizardmen broke through Paul Lawton’s greenskins, so I played Paul and Andy played Stuart. This was a harder battle for my elite elves, who died in droves to Goblin archers, and were lucky to get a draw. Andy beat Stuart, but becuase Andy had twice Stuart’s Teritories another Raid was in effect, so Stuart got a new Territory as well.

On other tables a bloody civil war broke out between Warren’s Dark Elves and Mark’s Dark Elves. To the casual observer it seemed to swing one way and another, before Warren emerged victorious. It was a bad night for Ogres, as Paul Belcher’s Ogres were the third Ogre army to be beaten in one night, beaten by Matt’s Lizardmen. Finally, Robin and James played a 3,000 point-per-side War of Conquest which featured no less than 3 Giants on the Greenskin side. This only managed 4 turns, and after massive slaughter all round it ended a draw.

So, after 4 weeks there have been 18 games played, and 61 Territories generated. Andy has got a clear lead, but James is coming a close second. There are several others still in the frame, so get those games in. The latest Territory List is attached – if you see anything wrong, please let me know soonest.

all the very best
